We're accepting nominations for the Board of Directors.   

Self-nominations are welcome! 

In the fall every year, we conduct an election for open positions on our Board of Directors. We welcome nominations from our members, including self-nominations.  


Are you a student?  We need you too!  

This fall (2019), we are accepting nominations for the following positions:  

  • President-Elect (1 position)
  • Treasurer (1 position)
  • Directors at Large (2 positions)
  • Student Director (1 position)

Questions about the process?  

The nominations committee receives and reviews all nominations and presents the proposed slate to the Board of Directors.  The Board of Directors is responsible for approving the slate before the ballot is submitted to the membership for voting.    

Who's eligible for the Board of Directors?

  • At the nomination stage, anyone can be nominated regardless of their membership in the Global Alliance. If a nominee is not a member and the nominee is selected for the ballot, the nominee will need to become a member before the ballot is sent to the membership.  
  • We welcome all disciplines and professions!  Our members are psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists, nurses, sociologists, lawyers, public health professionals, physicians, educators, counseling and more.  Our members are researchers, practitioners, students, policy makers, and others interested in behavioral health issues.
  • We welcome international members!   
  • The student director at large must be enrolled as a graduate student, resident physician, or post-doctoral fellow in a recognized training program in a discipline related to behavioral health.  

What is the term of open positions?

  • The president-elect position is a 2 year term beginning January 1, 2020. 
  • The treasurer position is a 3 year term beginning January 1, 2020. 
  • The directors positions are 3 year terms beginning January 1, 2020.
  • The student director is a one year term beginning January 1, 2020, with an option to renew for a second year.   

What are the responsibilities of a board member?   

  • Attend board meetings.  The Association usually has one in-person board meeting annually.  This meeting is usually scheduled over a weekend in the spring.  Other meetings are generally every other month by conference call for approximately one hour.  The meetings are usually scheduled for 7:00 Eastern time.    
  • Contribute to the substantive work of the Association, including helping to draft policy or position statements, organizing content for the Journal or other media (e.g., webinars, podcasts, etc.), connecting the Association with like-minded groups and organizations.  
  • Assist with the Association's programs.  This may include chairing or co-chairing task forces or study groups, participating on standing committees (e.g., finance, membership, awards), planning conference tracks, and attending the conference. 
  • The Student Director at Large also represents the perspectives of student members.  A more detailed job description is available here.  

How do you submit a nomination?  

  • Nominations must be submitted no later than October 1st to Deborah Klein Walker at [email protected]. 
  • To nominate yourself or someone else for a board position, send an email that includes the name, affiliation, and contact details.  To be considered, nominations must include a current CV and a statement of interest. 
  • If you are nominating yourself, your statement of interest is a paragraph that describes your interest in contributing to the Global Alliance and your experience with behavioral health issues.   
  • If you are nominating someone else, please be sure that they consent to the nomination.  Send their CV and a brief statement as to why the individual would be a good addition to the board.
